Moscow-based AGT Communications Agency divided the study into two categories: Ukrainian and Russian news agencies and newspapers. The study was conducted along with the analytical agency Smyslographia.
In the news agencies’ category, Interfax (Russian and Ukraine), RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS took the top three places. Combined, the three agencies were mentioned in 94 percent of all references to Ukrainian and Russian news agencies found in U.S. and EU news media outlets. Articles in Interfax in the specified period were mentioned in the Western press more than 31,000 times.

In the category of print publications, first place went to Russian Kommersant, with a nearly 25 percent share of mentions, while the Kyiv Post took second place with 22 percent of all mentions. Russian Vedomosti finished in third place with 19 percent. The news release by Victoria Makeenko, public relations director for KEY Communications, did not cite the number of references to the newspapers during the six months of the study.
The rankings took into account data on the leading American and European newspapers of the U.S. and the EU n the world’s largest international media database, Factiva Dow Jones. The database contains thousands of leading news and business sources from 200 countries.
Jakub Parusinski, the chief executive officer of the Kyiv Post, said the newspaper is happy with the findings.
“In a region where a free, reliable press is a rare and sadly dwindling currency, we’re proud that the Kyiv Post has been recognized as the main source of information about Ukraine,” Parusinski said. “For more than 19 years, the Kyiv Post has combined the highest standards of international journalism with in-depth local knowledge, and reported the truth in times good and bad alike. Barring the 2004 Orange Revolution, the world largely ignored Ukraine until the recent crisis. As people realize just how important this part of the globe is, I’m glad the Kyiv Post can play the critical role of providing them with reliable information.”
