Ukraine has started to deploy a network of gas turbine and gas piston mini-power plants to provide power sustainability in the wake of damage caused by Russian shelling, said Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
"Mini-power stations are expensive to produce electricity, but they accelerate very quickly – in up to 3 minutes. For comparison, a nuclear plant accelerates in three days and takes 1.5 months to extinguish. A thermal plant rises from a cold state in 8 to 12 hours, from a hot state in 30 minutes to 1.5 hours," the Prime Mister said.

He noted that there are some Ukrainian-made mini power stations, which have already been installed and operating in the warehouses. These mini-power stations have small blocks and do not require special intervention and maintenance. One station, on average, is designed for 50 MW, but 20 units in a row generate 1,000 MW, which is equal to the capacity of one nuclear unit.
The mini power stations can be used in large cities to provide water and heat. The second area of application is the energy security of nuclear generation.
"When the grid collapses during a blackout, it takes 100 to 150 MW to start a nuclear plant operation. It's impossible to generate such power with generators."
According to Shmyhal, as a result of nine waves of massive Russian missile strikes and dozens of smaller attacks, 50% of the energy system has been damaged or destroyed.
