A Russian jet accidentally dropped its payload on the village of Petropavlovsk in the Russian region of Voronezh region damaging several private homes. The accident occurred at the same time as Russia had hit Ukraine with its latest large-scale missile attack.

“On January 2, 2024, at around 9 a.m. Moscow time (GMT), during a flight of the Aerospace Forces, an abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition occurred over the village of Petropavlovsk,” the Russian army said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies.

Moscow’s military confirmed that six private residences had been hit, but underlined that there were no injuries. A commission has been deployed to the scene to assess the extent of the damage.

The governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, confirmed the incident in a Telegram post and also said that no one was injured.

Local residents complain that an entire street was destroyed and about a dozen houses were damaged. The affected residents are being relocated to temporary accommodation centers, including a nearby boarding house.

The Baza Telegram channel and others published videos and photos from Petropavlovsk taken after the explosions, which show the level of destruction of houses in the affected area.

It is not the first such incident during Moscow's almost two-year-long Ukraine offensive.

In April last year, the Russian army acknowledged that one of its warplanes accidentally dropped a bomb in the city of Belgorod, near the Ukraine border, the blast from which caused serious damage.
