A Ukrainian soldier allegedly shot and killed two of his comrades with a Kalashnikov assault rife in Kyiv City.

According to the press service of the military prosecutor’s office, the murder occurred over the course of Monday night.

“As the investigation has determined, a soldier from one of the military units stationed in the capital consumed alcoholic beverages with two fellow servicemen from the same military unit after completing a 24-hour shift,” the press service stated the next day, Tuesday, Oct. 3. 

The prosecutor's office said that after a dispute, the suspect shot his fellow servicemen with his weapon. After the shooting, he attempted to escape but was caught by law enforcement.

“During the arrest, a Kalashnikov assault rifle with cartridges was seized,” the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the Field of Defense of the Central region stated.

The detainee was notified of the suspicion under Clause 1, Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – deliberate killing of two or more persons.

If found guilty, he faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.

Vesti.ua reported that one of the deceased servicemen sustained four gunshot wounds and the other five.

Early on Oct. 3, reports began circulating on social media that the incident had occurred on Lavrska Street, in Kyiv's Pechersk district.

As the pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the investigators of the Pechersk District Police Department of Kyiv, Kyiv Post reached out to Oksana Tyshchenko, the district’s spokesperson, for comment.
