Searches have begun at the home of Nestor Shufrych, a controversial Ukrainian MP who is “suspected of treason,” a source in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has told Kyiv Post.

According to the results of an SBU investigation, the deputy cooperated with former Ukrainian deputy Volodymyr Sivkovich, a member of the government of fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych.

Sivkovich fled to Russia in 2014. In 2022, he was also accused of treason.

“Volodymyr Sivkovich coordinated work with the Ukrainian part of the group, which collected and passed on information constituting a state secret to representatives of the Russian Federation, and also tried to influence personnel decisions in the security agencies of Ukraine,” the SBU believes.

Since January 2022, Sivkovich has been under US sanctions. According to the SBU, he is considered a representative of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and the coordinator of the suspected Russian agent in Ukraine.

The SBU source claims that lawmaker Shufrych carried out Sivkovich’s instructions in Ukraine: “On his assignment, Shufrych was one of the mouthpieces of the Kremlin in Ukraine. For example, he said that our nation is an artificial entity.”

Shufrych – formerly a member of the now banned pro-Russian party Opposition Bloc – For Life – currently heads the parliamentary committee on freedom of speech.

Earlier, Kyiv Post explained why these parliamentarians continue to participate in Ukraine’s politics.
