In an intercepted phone call, a Russian soldier has told his wife of the “thrill” he gets from killing, saying that even when the war is over, he wants to carry on with his new “profession.”

“It used to happen that half of the dude was torn off, the guts were lying on the ground... but if you knew what a thrill I feel when I look at a khokhol [a derogatory term for a Ukrainian], shoot him, and he falls dead from my bullet,” the Russian soldier says in the intercepted call – which was released by Ukraine's Military Intelligence (HUR).

“Does it feel great?” the wife asks.

“Oh yes, so f**king exciting!” the soldier replies.

The wife then seeks further details: “Has a person ever been blown up in front of your eyes?”

“Of course. One time the guy's legs were intact, but the rest of the body was blown up,” he tells her.

“Or I remember a dude sitting, then the ‘bird’ [drone] drops a shell, tears him up where his [genitals] are, and he's still alive, yelling ‘shoot me.’ We didn't get to shooting him, he just bled out,” he said.

The soldier says he has become addicted to death and even if the war ends, he doesn’t want to give up this “profession.”

“It's not just some warm and fuzzy feeling! But it seems that this s**t will end, and I'll keep at this profession. I'm addicted to death!”

British Defence Intelligence Update Ukraine 23 December 2024

Latest from the British Defence Intelligence.

Though the intercepted call has not been independently verified, and the exact date when it took place is unknown, the situation for soldiers on both sides is difficult as Ukraine’s counteroffensive gains momentum.

Ukrainian soldiers have told Kyiv Post they will fight on, but morale has suffered with no quick end to the war in sight.

However, the release of such intercepted conversations by Ukraine’s intelligence services indicates that Russia’s military finds itself in a much more dire situation, with soldiers coming to fear their own side as much as that of their Ukrainian adversary.
