Following the explosion at the Kakhovska HPP on Tuesday, June 6, a large section of the population was stranded on the left bank of the Dnipro, which is under Russian occupation, by rising floodwater.

Ukraine and the United Nations have agreed to facilitate the evacuation from these territories. This information was confirmed in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, published on Thursday, June 8.

The agreement followed discussions between Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and UN coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, over the need for the organization to provide increased assistance.

In the meeting Ukraine insisted that the extensive destruction and suffering necessitated a more robust response.

"As a result of the meeting, it was agreed that the UN will promptly increase aid and deploy additional forces to Kherson and other affected regions," an MFA spokesman reported.

The parties also reached an agreement for the UN to establish teams in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, enabling them to be deployed to the affected areas within the occupied territories on the Left Bank.

Their objective will be to provide humanitarian aid and to evacuate individuals on the condition that safe passage to the occupied territories from the government-controlled areas of Ukraine can be ensured.

"Dmytro Kuleba assured the UN that Ukraine would guarantee the security of humanitarian operations throughout the affected area. However, UN units will only enter the temporarily occupied territories once Russia similarly grants access and provides security guarantees. At present, the UN is still awaiting the provision of these guarantees.
