Global Military Contribution to Ukraine Equals Year of Coffee

A cappuccino per day for a year is how much the world’s contribution to Ukraine’s military defense translates to per Ukrainian.

This is one of the findings of an analysis done by Kyiv Post that looked at global and specific countries’ military contributions to Ukraine on a per capita basis, i.e., per 43 million Ukrainians and per 500,000 members of the Ukrainian military.

The analysis also found that, on a global basis, Ukraine’s allies have provided some $1,720 per Ukrainian or some $147,000 per Ukrainian military member. The net global contribution is $73.5 billion to date.

In terms of the “per Ukrainian military member figure,” $150,000 is approximately equivalent to the price to buy:

·      10 Citreon C4 Cactus automobiles;

·      120 season tickets to Arsenal FC;

·      Two weeks on a Mediterranean cruise for a group of 12 people.

In terms of the “per Ukrainian in the general population” figure, $1,720 is approximately equivalent to the price to buy:

·      Less than one year of daily espresso in a European capital;

·      Around 270 Big Macs in the US;

·      Twenty return train tickets between London and Paris.

The analysis also found that the United States is the most generous country in the world having provided $1,070 per each Ukrainian and around $9,650 per Ukrainian military member for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion. The net American military contribution is $46.3 billion – or more than 60 percent of the world contribution.

With Russia’s full-scale invasion approaching the 1,000-day mark, 3.7 million people have already been displaced inside Ukraine and around 6.7 million have fled as refugees, according to UN figures.

In addition to the US, the other members of the “Top 5” military donors to Ukraine were:

·      With $7.1 billion in overall military aid, Britain has provided $161 per each Ukrainian and around $13,943 per Ukrainian military member.

·      With $3.8 billion in overall military aid, Germany has provided $89 per each Ukrainian and around $7,669 per Ukrainian military member.

·      With $2.8 billion in overall military aid, Poland has provided $60 per each Ukrainian and around $5,148 per Ukrainian military member.

·      With $2.5 billion in overall military aid, Netherlands has provided $59 per each Ukrainian and around $5,0624 per Ukrainian military member.

In terms of non-NATO members, the top two countries are:

·      With $1.2 billion in overall military aid, Sweden has provided $279 per each Ukrainian and around $2,424 per Ukrainian military member.

·      With $408 million in overall military aid, Australia has provided $94 per each Ukrainian and around $815 per Ukrainian military member.

Sweden’s contribution amounts to around one small lounge at Ikea (per full population) or a 20-year-old Volvo (per military members).

Australia’s contribution amounts to around two cases of beer (per full population) or one flat screen TV (per military members).

Several countries are notable for having to date provided zero military aid to Ukraine. Those include Hungary, Cyprus, China, Brazil, Japan, India, all Latin American countries, and all African countries.
