A two-year-old girl has been killed and 22 other people injured after a Russian missile hit a residential building in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

The attack late on Saturday evening partially destroyed a pair of two-storey buildings as well as 10 private homes, a shop and a gas pipeline, authorities said.

“At night, a girl's body was removed from the rubble of a house in Pidhorodne community. She just turned two years old,” Serhiy Lysak, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, posted on Telegram.

“I offer sincere condolences to the relatives... There are 22 victims in the attack, five of them are children.”

Three of the injured children are in a serious condition, he added.

"The Russians attacked the city," President Zelensky posted on Facebook on Saturday, saying more people were trapped beneath the wreckage.

"Once again, Russia proves it is a terrorist state. The Russians will bear responsibility for everything committed against our state and people."

Russian airstrikes on Ukraine have increased dramatically in recent weeks. In Kyiv overnight, which has seen almost nightly attacks for more than a month now, air raid sirens once again sounded in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The head of the local military administration said the capital's air defences repelled several missiles and drones, all of them being downed before reaching the skies above the city.
