Responding promptly to news today that Belarus has signed an agreement with Russia on the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on its territory, Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya, currently living in exile, has warned of the serious implications.
Tsikhanouskaya says that such a move would not only infringe upon Belarus’ constitutional non-nuclear status but also consolidate Russia’s control over the country for years to come.

The Russian TASS and Belarusian Belta news agencies reported on Thursday, May 25, that the Belarusian Defense Minister, Viktor Khrenin met with Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, in Minsk.
The two ministers signed what has been termed “nuclear sharing” documents that delineate the procedures for deploying, storing and controlling Russian tactical nuclear weapons that the Kremlin plans to bring to Belarusian territory.
